Jaap Kamps' advise to students at :

* Have fun doing science (it's about the process, not about the results): don't mind the paper rejections)
* Science is about people (all science is a about cooperation): Share you ideas early and a lot!
* Career advise: Despite the complaints (by your supervisor) We all love our jobs (otherwise, why we in academia) We have academic independence, academic freedom, and we work with new people and new ideas

Ruihua Song's paper on term proximity was rejected several times, so she published it as a technical report. Then it was picked up by Bing! (and subsequently the approach was published at ECIR 2008)
