Another internet is possible, and necessary, according to @EthanZ@twitter.com and José van Dijck. In this two-part GDS podcast they engage in an intriguing and highly informative conversation, moderated by @kfvanes@twitter.com.

Zorgen om lege (college-)zalen

"Ik wil geroezemoes, geduw, mensen die onhandig langs elkaar heen schuiven, popcorn snaaien en met bier richting het podium gooien."

Dat wil ik ook!

IBM and Samsung have successfully implemented transistors that are built perpendicular to the surface of the chip with a vertical, or up-and-down, current flow allowing for more energy efficient chips.

Pretty amazing. They (NSO Pegasus) abuse a single error in an image decompression algorithm and create a new computer in the memory of the device to be hacked, that then hacks the device.

No time today... or... I'd definitely have wanted to attend the:

Hey, #fediverse! I'm doing some research on the uses of Federated software by non-governmental organizations. I'm curious to see if NGOs use federated tools (especially Mastodon, but any fedi tools) to organize outside of corporate systems (e.g., Google, FB).

If you have tips, please send them my way! DMs are fine, and I will not publish names outside this space without consent.

Boosts appreciatd.

Decentralized secure file sharing on top of IPFS.

"The exploit proof of concept was then posted to Github at 15:32 GMT on December 9, 2021, and we saw the first attempts to trigger callbacks 82 minutes later"

that, my #infosec friends, is how long you had to figure out out to secure your infrastructure, long before patches were available from both commercial & open source software providers.

Comments on general JVM / JNDI and similar issues:

slf4j.org/log4shell.html this looks very much like something that will keep on yielding shells and exploits to those who search for them.

Fixing the Root Cause:

mail.openjdk.java.net/pipermai and the first request on the OpenJDK mailing list for fixing the root cause, rather than expecting libraries to accommodate the grotesque monstrosity of the JVM itself.

Mastodon

The "unofficial" Information Retrieval Mastodon Instance.

Goal: Make idf.social a viable and valuable social space for anyone working in Information Retrieval and related scientific research.

Everyone welcome but expect some level of geekiness on the instance and federated timelines.
