@arjen It's a first attempt to draw the 'big picture' and where I thought Data Science, IR and Information Science are related and should influence each other.

@ingo @arjen why are ranking functions in the data science part and not in IR?

@tfidf @arjen Good question! I'd argue, with a grain of salt, they don't take the user into account and usually make very simple assumptions (e.g., more frequent terms are more descriptive etc). But of course they are at the core of (system-oriented) IR and there are relevance models etc. Also, from our pDatalog experience we could argue ranking functions should be part of the database world - you can rank data as well.
